Catherine [unknown] was the sweetest girl in Billy town And my bad love for her was the thing that brought me down We were never married so in secret we would meet and lay In the field beyond the orchard, to the close of day And through that magic summer she would hold me Just like a tender wife And everything was perfect in this possible life Arthur [unknown], he is a crooked bastard of a man And it's my luck to be caught up in his wicked plan I know he loved my Catherine too, his was jealous, he was me And I saw the way he watched her walk across the green So sure that it was him that betrayed us When he went and saw the priest Now I'm marked for death like some dark hunted savage beast In the middle of a lovely dream the mob kicked in my door They dragged me to the cellar and threw me on the floor So I asked them then, "Why'd you bring me here at this ungodly time? What law is it I've broken, fiends, what is my crime?" They said that someone saw us dancing in the moonlight With the devil hand-in-hand Levitating round a bonfire while the old god stares So I begged them to see reason, I screamed my lungs out I cried, "As true as fire burns, I was never there" They said, "Your life is your confession, we can read the mind of God And it is his will that soon you'll be beneath the soil" They said that someone saw us dancing in the moonlight Naked underneath the stars Changing shape between the shadows into red-eyed birds They say the Lord is holy, they say the Lord is good They say the Lord died for us on a cross of wood Where is he now? I've sent to him such clear and solemn prayers Why doesn't he come forward, if he's really there They're lighting up the timber now, I feel the flames of hell The fire burns unknowing, doing its job well They can scorch my bones to ashes, they can throw me to the crows But I love my darling Catherine more than ever now They said that someone saw us dancing in the moonlight With the devil hand-in-hand Chanting incantations too bizarre to understand They said that someone saw us dancing in the moonlight And we signed our names in blood Sworn enemy of man and cursed by God |
