(Billy Walker)

Oh Matilda, I cannot sleep
Toss and tumble and I'm forced to weep
Oh Matilda, I cannot sleep
For wanting a love I couldn't keep.

Matilda was my dark haired bride
Promised to love me all my life
But promises they don't last too long
For Matilda she is gone.

Oh Matilda, I cannot sleep
Toss and tumble and I'm forced to weep
Oh Matilda, I cannot sleep
For wanting a love I couldn't keep.

A rich plantation owner he came by
Saw Matilda and he gave her the eye
The very next day Matilda was gone
It don't pay to be a poor man's son.

Oh Matilda, I cannot sleep
Toss and tumble and I'm forced to weep
Oh Matilda, I cannot sleep
For wanting a love I couldn't keep.

--- Instrumental ---

When cold winds blow and rainy nights come
This feeling for Matilda is strong
I still feel the warmth of her embrace
Tears start rolling down my face.

Oh Matilda, I cannot sleep
Toss and tumble and I'm forced to weep
Oh Matilda, I cannot sleep
For wanting a love I couldn't keep.

Wanting a love I couldn't keep.
Wanting a love I couldn't keep...
