Nigel stood upon the stage
Preaching to the people holy words to help them all survive
The year was nineteen fifty-five
It was the week before his seventh birthday

A woman in the second row
Put cash into the hat to pay for her piece of deliverance
With eighteen dollars fifty cents
In awe of this miraculous display

The old got Nigel's sleeve to say,
"I am lost and I am weary
Can you save me?"

There was a concert in the field
California there, three hundred thousand people gathered round
Like the sermon on the mount
To the gods of rock and roll they prayed

The bikies pushed against the crowd
The crowd pushed back and they fought on as the band played on
above this scene
And as I watched it on the screen
A man was stabbed between his shoulder blades

And as they dragged him to the ambulance
A girl nearby screamed, "Please somebody save me"

Nigel stood upon the stage
Going through his lonely act, a man of twenty-seven now
Wanting only to get out
Still kicking it like Jagger there for Jesus

And as for me, I'm waiting here
Working my way through all the layers between peace and hate
From my mediocre fate
There isn't anybody that can save me
