Hushed fingers and cigarettes
Played there role so well
In a stage play that I wrote
When I was your age

Our ambitions over our heads
But we let them slip away
And sometimes I think
We were happier those days

And we cried when we saw
Our goals being sold
To the men
Who wore silver and gold

And it's amazing to me
After all these years
That we lived every day
Without assurance or fear

We tattoo our tongues
With the stories we're afraid to tell
Until one day
We forget them all
