The first step down is the longest on your way down the ladder of disgrace
Take the cap from the top of the bottle
Just one drink then put it down that's what you say
But one drink just leads to another that's the first
step you're well on your way
The first step down is the longest they get shorter the rest of the way
Start talkin' to the wife of your best friend
Tell her lines build her up she'll come around
Win her heart bring her down to your level that's another
step your thirty far down
The first step down is the longest they get shorter the rest of the way

[ piano ]Stay out late losing sleep till you can't work
Go to places where you know you don't belong
Lose your job your home and your family
You're on the bottom now and it didn't take long
The first step down is the longest on your way down the ladder of disgrace
